CONTEXT
Optimize is a Danish-Swedish research and innovation project running from 2022 to 2025, supported by Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak. It addresses common complications during and after operations caused by medication side effects and fluid imbalance, which can prolong hospital stays and recovery, negatively affecting patient outcomes.
SOLUTION
The project develops and tests two healthcare technologies: immersive Virtual Reality experiences designed to replace relaxing drugs during awake surgeries by diverting patients’ attention, and an automatic fluid monitoring system that improves accuracy and reduces nurses’ manual workload, enhancing patient fluid balance management.
IMPACT
By reducing reliance on sedatives through VR and improving fluid balance accuracy, Optimize aims to shorten hospitalization and rehabilitation times, reduce complications, and provide patients with a safer, more comfortable surgical experience. These innovations have the potential to transform perioperative care in the healthcare system.
