CONTEXT

Esrum Abbey was founded in 1151 and became one of Denmark’s largest and most influential monasteries before most of the complex was lost after the Reformation. With only one original building remaining, Esrum Kloster wanted to bring the historic abbey back to life for visitors.

SOLUTION

In close collaboration with historians at Esrum Kloster, Khora reconstructed the abbey in VR using historical research and references from monasteries and churches across Europe. Visitors can explore its halls, gardens and architecture as they may have appeared at the abbey’s height.

IMPACT

The VR experience is now a permanent part of the museum exhibition, giving visitors an immersive way to experience an important piece of Danish cultural heritage that no longer physically exists.
